Rangers vs. Lightning Recap 3/13/2017

Rangers lose 3-2 to the Lightning tonight.

In the first period the Rangers came out strong and got a breakaway early. Eventually Kampfer scored a pretty shot from the point for his first goal as a Ranger, off of a Zuccarello and Kreider assist. Point was able to tie the game up for the Lightning shortly after. In the second period Dumont scored for the Lightning to make it 2-1. After that Grabner scored a nice unassisted goal after he stole it in the Lightning’s zone to tie it back up. In the third, Point found a way to put another past Raanta to take the lead back 3-2. The Rangers were not able to make anything happen after that.

The Rangers out played Tampa tonight, but Tampa was able to capitalize on their opportunities better then the Rangers. It was a good sign to see Grabner get that goal tonight, as the injury he has come back from doesn’t seem to be holding him back. Kampfer continues to make a case for himself to stay in the starting defensive core, and that would’ve been the case even if he didn’t score tonight. The defense has their shaky moments. They can be caught sometimes out of position, which causes a lot of goals to go against us. We have outstanding goaltenders, but they can’t do everything without a solid defense. Before the last two games, Ryan McDonagh has been struggling to play a solid defensive game. Hopefully he can start to re-focus himself, and his defense. Although they have their struggles, Antti Raanta only faced 16 shots. He mentioned that sometimes when you face less shots, it’s harder to get your game going.

The Rangers should have won this game tonight, they continue to struggle finishing grade A chances. Luckily they are in a comfortable spot in the standings, and in my opinion it’s the best spot to be. Avoiding the metropolitan and going through the Atlantic in the playoffs is a better road. Tough loss, although nothing to really worry about in the long run.
