With a little over 24 hours left before the trade deadline, the Rangers have pulled the trigger and made a trade. The NYR sent the Detroit Red Wings a 2nd round pick for 2018 and a 3rd round pick for 2017 in exchange for left handed defenseman Brendan Smith. Smith is 28, 6 foot 2, and 211 lbs. He wont light the lamp every night but he is a solid defensive defenseman that the NYR are in need of . He’s a good third pairing and possible second pairing. With Girardi out the next two weeks though, we may see Smith get some top line minutes with McDonagh because the two are former teammates in Wisconsin, only time will tell.
Tonight the NYR play the capitals. It is not yet confirmed if Smith will make it to the Garden in time to play, because the Red Wings are currently in Vancover. At the end of the day it was a smart move by Gorton not to bite on St. Louis’s overpriced offer the night before, and not give up a whole lot to acquire someone who could end up helping the NYR defensive core for the foreseeable future.
Welcome to NY Mr. Smith.
